  • Mr. Ted Armstrong sings If God So Clothed the Grass of the Field, which is taken from Matthew 6:25-29 (Sermon on the Mount). It is proceeded by a 3 ½ minute message from his father.

  • This song was taken from the end of the reel it was recorded on. After this song, only the beginning of the song Jerusalem, Jerusalem was recorded on the tape. Although only the first minute of this song sung by Mr. Ted Armstrong exists, it was put at the end of his first song for historic purposes.

Explanation of WCG Expulsion - Part 1 and Part 2
Garner Ted Armstrong
August 5, 1978

Part 1 - MP3 | Part 2 - MP3

Message Highlights/Background:

  • Mr. Armstrong was born Feb. 9th, 1930 in Portland, Oregon. His father, Herbert W. Armstrong, founded the Radio Church of God (changed to Worldwide Church of God (WCG) in 1968) in 1934. GTA was the primary voice of the WCG on radio/TV for many years up to 1978.

  • Mr. Armstrong was expelled and disfellowshipped for several alleged reasons such as trying to divert church mail in attempt to steal funds for his personal use and giving the media misleading and distorted information about his father. This message is GTA's explanation of charges and events that led to his dismal. He is now founder of the Intercontinental Church of God.

(Note: Please do not call or write to the contact information given in the above messages. Mr. Armstrong can be reached at his Website at www.gtaea.org.

Respect Authority/Church Government - Part 1 and Part 2
Herbert W. Armstrong
September 15, 1951
Pasadena, California

Part 1 - MP3 | Part 2 - MP3

Top of Page

Message Highlights/Background:

  • This is a complete worship service. This message opens with the church singing a hymn then Raymond McNair gives the opening prayer. After Mr. Armstrong's message, the church sings The Servant's Prayer by Dwight Armstrong.

  • In the first part of the message Mr. Armstrong discusses the purchase of several pieces of property for the church's college in Pasadena. After this brief discussion Mr. Armstrong introduces his daughter Beverly, who sings Let the People Praise Thee.

  • Mr. Armstrong explains what he believes the Bible teaches about authority and church government. He states that government within God's church is from the "top-down," not from the "bottom-up." God exercises His power through the ministry to the brethren, he states. Additionally, because the ministry understands the truth of the Bible, their decisions they "bind" on earth will also be "bound" by God in heaven [this latter idea was dropped by the early 1970s as we came to understand its true meaning].

Lipstick and Church Government
Herbert W. Armstrong
October 7, 1955
Big Sandy, Texas - During Feast of Tabernacles

Listen - MP3

Top of Page

Message Highlights/Background:

  • Mr. Armstrong states that the ministers have decided, with God's guidance, that women should not wear makeup (specifically, lipstick). It is stated that makeup (lipstick) is a test of whether the women will be submissive and obey God's government (the ministry in the church) or not. If anyone accuses the government of God (e.g. the ministry) of being the government of men, they come very close to committing the unpardonable sin [this sort of idea was dropped by Mr Armstrong by the early 1970s].

  • Mr. Armstrong also briefly discusses the difference between church government in the Radio Church of God and the Catholic Church.

Message Highlights/Background:

  • Mr. Armstrong discusses list of cities, ranked by number of members/co-workers, where a church can be raised up once an ordained minister is available to lead it.

  • Mr. Armstrong states that members in cities without a Minister should not meet for church services. He forbid anyone to set up services because he felt the group would fall apart within a year.

  • The income and expenses for both the church and the college between June 1955 - June 1956 are delineated in great detail.

Message Highlights/Background:

  • Mr. Armstrong introduces Norman Smith and George Meeker Jr. to the crowd. They were made Ministers after January 1, 1955. Those made Ministers after the previous year's Feast of Tabernacles are Garner Ted Armstrong (ordained Spring, 1955), Burk McNair, C. Wayne Cole and Dean Blackwell (who was at the "rank" of Elder and was raised to Pastor "rank"). The first woman made Deaconess in the church, Annie Mann, is also mentioned.

  • Mr. Armstrong implies that he is at the Apostle "rank." He states the only position in the church higher than the Evangelists he ordained (Roderick Meredith, Herman Hoeh, etc. were given this rank) is Apostle.

Mystery Messages

Our detective skills are sharp, but not perfect. We succeeded in finding the name of most of the speakers on the reel-to-reel messages that ended up on this CD. However, there were a few sermons and studies where we were clueless as to the speaker's name. If you recognize any of the below speakers, write or email us and clear up the mystery!
