Wait Upon the Lord
(RCOG - "Thirty Seventh Psalm", WCG 74, "Rest in the
Lord")
Words: Psalm 37:1, 2, 6, 9, 7, 8 from "Old Bible" *** see note below
Music:
1. For evil doers fret thou not.
thy self unquietly;
Nor do thou envy bear to those
that work iniquity.
For even like the fading grass,
they shall be cut down soon;
And like the green and tender herb,
they wither-ed shall be.
2. Rest in the Lord, in patience wait,
nor for the wicked fret;
Who prospering in his evil way,
success in sin doth get.
For yet a little while and then
the wicked shall not be;
His place thou shalt consider well,
but it thou shalt not see.
3. Do thou from anger turn away
and also cease from wrath;
Fret not thyself in any wise,
That evil thou should'st do.
For they that evil doers are
shall be cut off and fall;
But those who wait upon the Lord,
the earth inherit shall.
*** Note: in the RCOG hymnal, these words were attributed to an "Old Bible."
The RCOG version was also almost identical to The Psalter of the United Presbyterian
Church of North America, 1887 edition. The 1974 and 1993 hymnals discontinued the
attribution, changed the words slightly, and for some reason most rhymes were
removed so
that the result was very ungainly and harsh to the ear. We have used the RCOG version (the
one closest to the original "Old Bible" / Presbyterian version) here, and have
restored the last line to its original form from the Presbyterian version.
