RCOG - "One Hundred Nineteenth Psalm"
1. I hate the thoughts of vanity
but I do love Thy law.
Thou art my shield and hiding place;
I on Thy word rely.
All ye who evil doers are,
from me depart away;
Because the precepts of my God
I purpose to obey.
2. Uphold and strengthen me according
to thy faithful word;
That I may love and of Thy hope,
may never be ashamed;
And to thy statutes I will have
respect continually,
They hold me up so shall I be
in peace and service still.
WCG 1974 - "I Hate the Thoughts of Vanity"
A verse was added, and the last part of the second
verse reworded for slightly better scansion.
1. I hate the thoughts of vanity
but I do love Thy law.
Thou art my shield and hiding place;
I on Thy word rely.
All ye who evil doers are,
from me depart away;
Because the precepts of my God
I purpose to obey.
2. Uphold and strengthen me according
to thy faithful word;
That I may live and of Thy hope,
may never be ashamed.
O, hold me safe, and ever in
Thy will let me delight;
That for the statutes of my God
I may have deep respect.
3. My God will set at naught all those
who from His precepts stray;
For their own lies are all in vain,
and they themselves deceive.
For all the wicked of the earth
are counted but as dross;
And therefore do I love Thy law
and testimonies pure.
WCG 1993 - "The Precepts of My God"
Only two verses again. Reworded extensively, especially in the
second verse. Now the metre scans better and most of
the harsh unrhymed endings have been corrected. Altogether
the best of the three versions by far.
1. The thoughts of vanity I hate
but I do love Thy law.
Thou art my shield and hiding place;
my Rock steadfast and sure.
All ye who evil doers are,
from me depart away;
Because the precepts of my God
I purpose to obey.
2. According to Thy faithful word
uphold and strengthen me;
That I may live and of Thy hope,
may never be ashamed.
O, hold me safe, so I shall be
in peace and safety still;
And in Thy statutes have respect;
continually I will.
