Friends of the Family Library Begins

Ron and Donna McKown of Lorena, Texas, have volunteered to manage a new Giving & Sharing activity, Friends of the Family Library.  This is a free lending library of family-oriented materials from Focus on the Family and other sources.  Video tapes, cassettes, books, and pamphlets supporting the Biblical family are now available for loan.  This service is free to requestors in North America only.  USA tax deductible contributions are welcome, to cover postage, supplies, and the addition of new items to the library.  If you have worthwhile used videos and books supporting the family, we encourage you to donate them to Friends of the Family Library, so that others can benefit from them.  Thanks for your help!

A team reviews materials for inclusion in the library.  Although most of the authors of this material do not observe the Bible Sabbath, we have selected items based on their overall content and beneficial service to the Almighty’s people.   It is our goal to make this service self-sustaining, and add more items to the list, as well as eventually establish Friends of the Family Libraries in other countries.  Write to:  Friends of the Family Library, 3127 Old Lorena Road, Lorena, Texas 76655, telephone 817-666-3682.

Earl Lewis Temporarily Swamped!

The Giving & Sharing Bookstore service recently has had a deluge of orders, more than double our normal volume.  To make matters worse, Earl Lewis, our bookstore manager, had to tend to some critical household repairs.  As a result, he got behind in filling orders.  He is in the process of catching up, and we appreciate your patience and understanding.  You may call Earl Lewis at 417-525-4211.

Earl Lewis needs a computer to help him in bookstore operations.  If anyone has a used computer that you would like to donate to Giving & Sharing, we would appreciate it greatly.

The “Lost” Tribes of Israel . . . Found!

Many assume that the ten tribes of Israel “disappeared” or “died out” in ancient history.  However, Hosea 1 prophesied that God would multiply their population after their expulsion from Palestine around 721 B.C.!  A century later, the prophet Jeremiah sent a message to the ten tribes, and Josephus, the famous Jewish historian of the first century A.D., wrote that the ten tribes were too numerous to count and even named their western border.  The 439-page book, The “Lost” Ten Tribes of Israel . . . Found! by Steven M. Collins, gives well-documented facts about Israel’s migrations, triumphs, and defeats throughout history.

Chapters include:  King David and Israel’s Rise to Greatness, King Solomon and the “Golden Age” of Israel, Israel — The Forgotten World Empire, Israelite and Jewish Migrations from Palestine, Carthage — The Colony that became an Empire, The Scythian “Sacae” — the Asian “Sons of Isaac,” Parthia — The Forgotten Ancient “Superpower,” The Life of Jesus Christ — The Untold Story, The Missing Eighteen Years (Age 12-20), Israelite Migrations from Asia after Parthia’s Fall, The Tribes of Israel in the Modern World.

This interesting book is available for $16 (which includes $4 for shipping) from:  Steven M. Collins, 3901 Crescent Drive, Sioux Falls, SD  57106. FOR ORDERS ONLY: Call Toll-Free, 1-888-687-5191

From our home in Gillette, Wyoming, we are providing a toll-free telephone service for the Bible Sabbath Association and Giving & Sharing.  You are encouraged to use this toll-free number (no orders taken on the Sabbath).

For Giving & Sharing, you may use our toll-free number to order our free literature, request an order blank, or place your name on our mailing list.  For the Bible Sabbath Association, you may request literature, subscribe to the excellent magazine, The Sabbath Sentinel, as well as order the latest edition of the Directory of Sabbath-Observing Groups.  A special item available from the Bible Sabbath Association is a 16-page Sabbath promotional booklet, “Why Do You Observe Sunday?” available free to individuals and church groups.  Your Church group may wish to advertise this article as part of a local evangelistic activity.

Are you part of a Sabbath-keeping church group who wishes to reach out to others?  Contact us about using our toll-free number service.  We can receive orders from your respondents, and either fill requests for literature for you from our location, or mail (or E-mail) you shipping lists for you to fill orders.  We can also maintain shipping records and addresses for you.  You decide on the literature or program material, and we help you with toll-free telephone ordering service, as well as optional shipping service.  Are you scheduling a festival site, summer youth camp,  or local public Bible Study?  Use our toll-free telephone service for reservations and registration.  We do the “busy work” on your behalf.  For more information, contact:  Shirley Nickels at 307-686-5191.

A network of independent Sabbath-keepers shares resources for printing and shipping literature, tapes, and other material.  We agree on the Bible Sabbath and many other Bible essentials.  We voluntarily work together, and trust the Eternal to help us all to see eye to eye at some future time as He wills. We believe it is foolish to “reinvent the wheel.” We must share resources to work toward the common goal of proclaiming the good news of the kingdom.

Elders and Virgins

R.G., of Colorado, writes:  “I read with interest your article in your latest newsletter (April 1996) on ‘Finding Fault With Them.’  For the most part I agreed with your article.

“However, I strongly disagree with the following statement, ‘There appears to be no Bible prohibition against an elder marrying again after his first wife dies, provided that he marries a virgin.’

“To back this up you quoted Lev. 21:13-14.  Those verses are referring only to the high priest as the entire context makes clear.  In Lev. 21:7, in speaking of the priests [in general], there is no mention that they must marry a virgin.

Lev. 21:1-4 states that a priest shall not defile himself for the dead, except for close relatives such as mother and father.

“In speaking of the high priest it says, ‘nor shall he go near any dead body, nor defile himself for his father or his mother,’ (verse 11).

“The reason for these differences between the priests and the high priest is that the high priest was symbolic of Christ.  Christ now holds the office of high priest and is going to marry a chaste virgin.  That is why the high priest had to marry a virgin.  But there is no such prohibition for a [regular] priest.”

COMMENT:  Thanks for correcting us.  Note that, regarding a regular priest, the Bible says, “They shall not take a wife that is a whore, or profane; neither shall they take a woman put away from her husband:  for he is holy unto his God,” Leviticus 21:7.  Today, there are scores of professing ministers among the various Church of God  groups, who have not feared to remarry a divorced woman.  This is a great sin, as the leaders of the Eternal’s people are to be holy examples to the flock.

New Disks on Church History and Biblical Holy Days

Sharing Disks, our computer disk service, has some new disks available.  Disk D006 ($2.50 suggested donation) contains A History of the True Church, by Andrew N. Dugger and C.O. Dodd, as well as The Bible Home Instructor.  These Church of God (Seventh Day) classics are the crown jewels of Church of God history, and formed the basis for the Biblical knowledge of Herbert W. Armstrong.  Reprints of these books have long been available from Giving & Sharing (donations of $7.50 and $9.00 respectively).

Disk D007 ($5.00 suggested donation) is a two-disk set, containing our 500-page book on Biblical Holy Days.  The printed form is planned for printing when funds are available, but a LOAN copy is available now for a donation of $5.00.

Return to Babylon?

It is a great joy to see the enthusiasm of those who have newly come into the Truth.  But, it is a cause of great sorrow to see some who have returned to false doctrines that they once rejected.

Evangelist Ralph Woodrow’s well-documented, easy-to-read, 167-page book, Babylon Mystery Religion, is a monumental expose of pagan influences in professing Christianity.  Giving & Sharing has long promoted this excellent book.  The Spanish version, Babilonia, Misterio Religioso, has helped many Hispanic Catholics to come out of the great false church.

Yet in the past few years, Woodrow has rejected much of the foundational teachings he formerly taught.  Does this sound familiar?  Although not a Sabbath-keeper, Woodrow once eschewed Christmas and Easter, because of their pagan origins, which he convincingly proved in Babylon Mystery Religion.  Also, he rejected the traditional Good Friday-Easter Sunday teaching; instead, Woodrow supported the Biblical teaching of three days and three nights from the Master’s death to His resurrection.

Following the current tide of religious liberalism, Woodrow’s short, scantily documented booklets, “Christmas Reconsidered,” “Easter, Is it Pagan?” and “Three Days and Three Nights — Reconsidered” are an about-face from his formerly Bible based teachings.  Although Woodrow currently does not promote Babylon Mystery Religion, he still has an inventory of these books he does not believe in, available to Giving & Sharing at wholesale discount.

If you would like to help keep alive the classic book, Babylon Mystery Religion, write Giving & Sharing for a copy ($3.50 suggested donation).  Don’t follow Ralph Woodrow’s new departure from Truth.  Don’t return to Babylon.

Passover:  14th or 15th?

For some time, we have recommended Fred Coulter’s excellent book on the Passover, The Christian Passover, What Does It Mean?  When Should It Be Observed — the 14th or 15th?  Coulter’s 303-page book is a definitive study of this important subject.

Dr. Samuel Bacchiocchi rejected Mr. Coulter’s book outright, saying that no reputable scholar believes that the Passover is to be observed on the beginning of the 14th day of the first Hebrew month.  Is your faith based on what so-called “Bible scholars” say, or what the Bible says?  The Bible takes a very dim view of scholars in general, Malachi 2:12, I Corinthians 2:1-16.  While we need ministers to teach and lead us, the Almighty ordained that His truth come to us individually by His Spirit, not through “scholars.”  Unlike Bacchiocchi, who admitted to me that he did not read Coulter’s book, I hope you will not reject the Truth without an honest study.

Mr. Coulter informs me that now he will send a copy of his book, FREE, to anyone who identifies himself or herself as a member of the Sabbath-keeping Church of God.  You may call him at 408-637-1875, or write Fred Coulter, PO Box 1442, Hollister, CA 95024.

Biblical Doctrine Book Updated

The third edition of our book, Biblical Doctrine, has just been re-printed.  It has been updated for the massive doctrinal changes of the Worldwide Church of God since 1993, as well as the inclusion of the United Church of God.  From Seventh Day Adventists, to Church of God (Seventh Day), to the Assemblies of Yahweh, we compare and analyze doctrinal beliefs of many Sabbath-keeping groups.  This 92-page book is available for a suggested donation of $4.00 from Giving & Sharing, PO Box 100, Neck City, MO 64849.
