JOSEPH W. TKACH
January 1988
Dear Friend:
Thank you for your question concerning the Rose Parade, held
in Pasadena each year.
The Tournament of Roses Parade is not a celebration of the
New Year, even though it is usually held on the first day of
January. In some years, 1984 for example, it is postponed a day
because it is never held on Sunday.
This parade originated decades ago when Pasadenans drove
their cars in a procession exhibiting the fruits and flowers
grown in this area. Eventually, the cars were replaced by floats
covered with flowers. The parade honors the Rose Bowl football
game and has no intrinsic connection with pagan deities.
Thank you for your interest. If we may serve you in some
additional way, please let us hear from you.
