Dear Friend:
Thank you for your question concerning the Star of David.
Contrary to what some think, the Star of David or, in the
Hebrew, "Maguen David" (literally, "Shield of David") does not
have its roots in paganism. Although it was adopted in the Middle
Ages as a magical symbol, it was originally a purely decorative
geometric design exclusive to no particular culture or religion.
Nonetheless, since it has now come to be associated with the
modern nation of Israel and/or Judaism, one should exercise
discretion in wearing this symbol. In other words, it is a
national emblem which can identify the wearer with the nation of
Israel, Judaism, or both.
For further information and background, we suggest seeing
"The Jewish Almanac." You could probably locate a copy in your
local library.
Whenever we may assist you further with your study of the
Bible, we hope you will let us know. It is our pleasure to serve
you.
