Dear Friend:
Thank you for your question concerning Exodus 4:24-26 and
why God sought to slay Moses.
Whether or not it was Moses or his son whom God sought to
kill has been disputed by a number of Hebrew scholars. Verse 24
does not clearly give the answer.
Moses knew that all Israelites were to be circumcised after
they were eight days old. However, his wife was a gentile and did
not believe in circumcision. Apparently, Moses let his wife have
her way and failed to circumcise his son.
If you will read all of Exodus 4, you will see that Moses
was going back to lead God's people, Israel, out of Egypt, and
yet did not have his own house in subjection. God could not allow
His direct representative to lead the entire nation of Israel
when he had not faithfully obeyed the command to circumcise his
own son. Please see Genesis 17:10-14.
Thank you again for your question. If we can be of further
service, please let us know.
